Jamie Hamilton

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Jamie Hamilton. He gave me a good interview for www.thevideoanlyst.com Jamie was the video analyst with the Leicester Tigers from 2003 - 2008. Recently he has moved to the Canterbury Crusaders in New Zealand.

He gave some great insights as life as a full-time video analyst, from weekly duties to preparing for the opposition.

Hope you enjoy the interview and as usual if you have any questions of feedback please get in touch.

EasyTag Developments

Since the last video we have added some developments. See both below. There are a couple of more features I would like to show you, but I though I would start with these.

The first of which is adding the statistic to the button itself rather than in a column at the bottom of the screen. This means that you can immediately see the relevant information on screen without the need to scroll across.

I think this is a great addition. EasyTag will be officially launched at the Gaelic conference in Croke Park on November 27/28 but feel free to get in touch before then if you have any questions. robert.carroll@tocasports.com

The second development is a little more advanced but could be a great addition for some of you stato's. Up until last week a heat map meant little or nothing to me. Basically it supplies extra visual feedback through colour. You will see clearly from the video what I mean. The buttons change colour on a scale from Green (most) to Red (least) depending on the number of times they have been selected.

Let me know what you think of this development.

Irish Boxing

Just a quick note to say congrats to the Irish Boxing Team over in Beijing. Alan Swanton of the NCTC worked with the high performance unit over the last 18 months as their video analyst, a lot of hard work put in by all concerned. It is fantastic that they will come home with at least 2 bronze and a silver.

Making A DVD

A lot of people want to take the next step with their analysis and produce their movies on a DVD. While I would always recommend you play the clips back through Dartfish, as it gives you much more flexibility, that is not always possible. Sometimes teams like to play some video on the bus to the game or hand out DVD's for players to review.

Below is a quick video on how to go from Dartfish to DVD. It is worth watching the storyboard blog first as I pick this Blog up from there.

As always you feedback and comments are most welcome, and if there is anything that needs further explanation just ask.

What is Tagging

For those of you new to Dartfish - this will hopefully explain the main functions of Tagging. I have used Gaelic Football as an example but any sport can be used. In fact anything that you can video can be tagged, as the people from Dog Agility will tell you.

Anyway have a look at the video, it is not comprehensive but will give you a feel for what can be done.

The Storyboard

I have chosen the storyboard to start with purely because of all the requests I have had over the last few weeks (also the reason I have started the blog).

What is the storyboard?

From the video below you will see I have 6 videos created and I can play each of them together or one at a time. The storyboard basically allows me manage my video in bigger chunks. So I can group all my kickouts together or all my shots together. This also makes it much easier to manage my files when I go to put these clips on a cd or DVD (we will see this in a later post).
In a lot of cases I prefer to use tagging when I present back to teams or managers but some people like the storyboard.

For now I hope to show you how to create a series of these videos .

As you will see in the video I have presumed a working knowledge of tagging (I will add plenty more posts on tagging over the next couple of weeks), but obviously you can still follow the steps and just import files from your library.

The video will explain most things but for those who like it in words.
  1. Select the events you want to put in the storyboard.
  2. Click Storyboard.
  3. Make sure 'selected events' is checked.
  4. Check clear storyboard - this will get rid of anything you had previously in it.
  5. Check open storyboard - this will 'amazingly' open the storyboard.
  6. You are now in the analyzer and your events appear across the bottom, almost like a powerpoint presentation. In fact thats the best way to think of the storyboard, except instead of still slides you have videos.
  7. It is now really simple to pick up events (left click with the mouse and drag) if you want to change the order the events appear.
  8. If you want to delete an event: right click and hit delete. This will not delete the clip permanently just remove it from the storyboard.
